progress bar

hi,
in my forms i am using a progress bar.now i am using this with timer.Now what i want is i want to progress the status of progrrass bar related  to my activity.One main activity is insertion to database .how can i set the progress bar related to insertion to database.Next main activity is mail sendin and for this also how can i set the progress bar
